If any further proof were needed that confidence is a fragile commodity, and given recent stock market activity we probably don’t, it was demonstrated this afternoon. I couldn’t tell whether is was lack of confidence or over confidence at the outset. The team shouldn’t have been concerned about their reception after the Croatia game so maybe it was over confidence, it certainly looked like everyone was taking an extra touch on the ball and looking for a killer pass and not taking a quick look and if nothing was on, moving the ball with the simple pass and let someone else take a look. The Kazaks quickly showed they were deserving of more respect than I think they were given at the start of the game and had the advantage of unfamiliarity. All this being said we should still have been better than we were in the first half. Shortly into the second half we had done the most important thing, despite still not looking that good, and got a two goal cushion but, thanks to an egregious, chucklehead play by Ashley Cole, we had to wait until the last 15 minutes before seeing that we could still knock the ball around, control the play, control the tempo, have the opposition running around ineffectually and be creative. Hopefully Capello’s English is now good enough to get the virtue of patience and confidence in your teammate’s creative ability across to the team in time for Wednesday’s game.
