Nothing to do with Windows being rubbish, more a desire to try something different. I love the Mac, but don't get me wrong, I'm still a big Windows user, and Win 7 is, without doubt in the 2 weeks I've been using it a breath of fresh air after Vista

In response to:Windows 7? Anybody? Hello???

Hi there - we've a mutual friend in David over at Palmblogging I believe.

I've installed Windows 7 on both my home desktops. One was a Vista box and the other an XP box. Neither new - minimum couple of years old.

Did a clean install on both.

Verdict?

Windows 7 is superb. Well worth upgrading. Interface is great, connecting the two PC's together on my home wireless network was a breeze. Far more polish than XP, and far less restrictive than Vista.

If you make the jump - and I'd recommend it, make sure you back up, and if you have the time, do a clean install. Well worth the time and effort of reinstalling programs to get rid of all the "kludge" that inevitable builds up in any system over time.

Hope that's helpful. If you've any specific questions, please drop me an email
I got my copy of Win7 Ultimate yesterday, Absolutely love it.... But I tried changing the 'Max Memory' from 4096 to 4095, and it indeed set itself down to 3584mb or so. So in the process you loose 600mb of your memory.

I don't think for me its worth it to loose 1/7th of my memory for a capture card, especially after now being able to fully utilize all 4 gigs, so I'll likely be looking to purchase a new card (or USB Hi-Def Capture device). Otherwise Win7 installed all drivers right off the bat. Latest nVidia Graphics drivers, sound drivers, everything. After it loaded the desktop (which was only about 20 minutes after starting a fresh install from the DVD), I didn't have to do a single hardware driver update. :) I was amazed that everything just worked perfectly. YMMV Depending on the hardware I guess, though my system is about 2.5 years old.

No problems with 64bit yet, although I've only been running it a day now. Though I'm sure hoping it stays as smooth as its been going for me. I can also tell you this, I don't know if its because its coded to be more multi-threaded or just more efficient, but with my Quad Core 2.4ghz Processor... Loading a folder with 8000 images in thumbnail mode, is about 800% faster than XP was... In the time it took XP to load a full screen of thumbnails (3 - 4 seconds), Windows 7 can load 5 or 6 full screens worth (while one is scrolling down quickly)

I'm also running Outlook 2007 (My XP Install was running 2003, so it was fun to export all the registry entries, then import them into Win7 to get my accounts/sorting filters back.) So far so good, no problems with it yet.

I figure with all the good stuff I've encountered... Anything bad or problematic that I run into, I'm just going to have to find workarounds, as this OS is too good to give up to go back to XP.

In response to:Windows 7 Upgrade advisor output

Not quite sure which bit you are referring to?

In response to:Windows 7 Upgrade advisor output

I agree, but I'm not so sure about what you said at the beginning.
:) I considered that too, coming from XP Pro... Though that's the only thing (and a couple very old programs I don't use anymore) that Upgrade Advisor warned about, Everything else hardware-wise is 64bit supported (Other than my video card, an XFX nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS... It says its fully supported, but that it doesn't have the capability to run Aero, which I fully believe is a lie, as I ran the earlier Win7 Beta back in Jan/Feb and it worked perfect, heh.)

I ordered the retail version, so I can do one or the other, though figure 64bit is much more supported than it was a few years ago, so I'm jumping in with both feet to try it out.

Good luck!

In response to:Windows 7 Upgrade advisor output

Thanks for the heads up on that.
I actually have the same Hauppage Capture card. Just thought I'd give you my 2 cents as I've heard it was a nightmare to get that card working under Windows 7... (My copy of Windows 7 will be here early this upcoming week, so everything below is just notes I've kept for when I upgrade to 7.)

If you have 4GB of memory or more, which it seems you do... If you do nothing, the card/WinTV app will crash constantly... I've read that to fix it you can either pull a stick of memory out so its less than 4GB, or more easily if you go to Start->Run open msconfig, then go to the boot tab -> Advanced Options, change 'Max Memory' from 4096 to 4095, it will work perfectly fine.

I've read reports of it automatically setting itself down to 3584mb in some cases after you do that, but its easier and better than having to pull memory to get it to work. Or at least until you get a new capture card that won't be buggy... ;)

Keep it in mind if you're getting the 64bit version. I don't know if it affects the 32bit version of 7 or not, so I guess keep it in mind for that too.

In response to:Windows 7

balls

In response to:Executive decision

ooooooooo.....you've got heating!
